The latest issue of the VeriSign Domain Name Industry Brief reports that the third quarter of 2007 ended with a total base of 146 million domain name registrations worldwide across all of the Top Level Domain Names (TLDs). This represents a six percent growth over the second quarter and 31 percent growth over the same quarter last year. The total base of ccTLD registrations was 54.6 million, a six percent increase quarter over quarter and a 38 percent increase year over year. Reviewing the total base of registrations in both global TLDs and ccTLDs, .COM has the highest base with the next two spots remaining unchanged with .DE (Germany) and .NET rounding out the top three. This quarter, .CN (China) moved solidly to the fourth spot. This leaves the fifth spot to be shared by .UK (United Kingdom) and .ORG with approximately the same number of total domain name registrations.

Highest Spend Ever For Cyber Monday

The latest numbers from comScore show that US online shoppers spent $733 million on the Monday after Thanksgiving, aka Cyber Monday, more than 20 percent than last year and 84 percent more than the average daily online spending totals during the preceding four weeks.
"While that makes it the heaviest online shopping day on record, we expect that a number of individual shopping days during the coming weeks will surpass the Cyber Monday total, with some days potentially surpassing $800 million," said comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni, in a statement.
VeriSign reported that online consumers saw more than 150 million instances of the VeriSign seal on Cyber Monday. The one-day total was an all-time record and represented a 50 percent increase over last year's 100 million impression milestone. The VeriSign Secured Seal, which includes the widely recognized "VeriSign check mark," is a common fixture on Web pages of leading online merchants, financial services providers and other business.

Domain Name Industry Brief: Registrations Hit New Record

The latest VeriSign Domain Name Industry Brief reports that the number of new domain name registrations hit an all time high in the second quarter of 2007 with 14.5 million new registrations, exceeding the previous high mark hit in the fourth quarter of 2006. The largest top-level domains (TLD) in terms of total base of registrations are .com, .de (Germany), .net, .uk (United Kingdom), .cn (China) and .org. A factor in the expansion of domain name registrations in the second quarter was strong growth in country code TLD (ccTLD) registrations, such as China (.cn), Russia (.ru) and South Korea (.kr). ccTLDs grew to about 51.5 million by the end of the second quarter, approximately 13 percent more than the first quarter of 2007, and 36 percent more than the same quarter of last year. Other gTLDs saw growth as well, including .com and .net, which grew to 73 million domain name registrations.

Top Companies Lobby Against Cyber Fraud

Well-known brands such as Dell Inc., Yahoo Inc. and Marriott International Inc. are among companies that have joined a new coalition lobbying Congress for tougher laws targeting people who seek to profit from their brand names and use them to commit online fraud. The Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse has hired law firm Alston and Bird LLP to persuade federal lawmakers of the need to crack down against those who claim Web addresses, or domain names, that include -- or even resemble -- a legitimate company's trademark.

New VeriSign Reports Detail Growth in Domains, Pay Per Click Advertising

The latest Domain Name Industry Brief reports that total domain name registrations reached 128 million, representing a 31 percent increase over the same quarter in the previous year, and a 6 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2006.

New domain name registrations reached 10.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, a signal that strong growth continues for the domain name industry. ccTLDs increased 33 percent year-over-year to 45.7 million, and 5 percent from the previous quarter. Though the approximately 2 million new ccTLD registrations totaled just roughly half of the record-breaking ccTLDs added last quarter, the number reflects an 86 percent increase from ccTLD registrations year-over-year.

VeriSign processed approximately 7 million new registrations for .COM and .NET domain names in the first quarter of 2007. This represented a 13 percent increase over the fourth quarter 2006 and a 13 percent increase over the first quarter 2006. At the close of the first quarter, VeriSign counted 69 million .COM and .NET domain name registrations in the base. This represents a 6 percent increase in the first quarter 2007 compared to the fourth quarter 2006, and a 28 percent increase year-over-year.

The second report is a new one that shows the importance of domain parking, the VeriSign Domain Name and Pay Per Click Advertising Report. The report defines two types of PPC domains. The first are "PPC-repurposed" sites, a term to describe temporary parking pages that registrars show when a domain is registered by a customer but not in use yet. Second are "PPC-intent" domain names, which were registered with the intent of monetizing through parked pages. The report discusses the various ways people find and register these domains, including the five-day grace period and add/drop process.
