Verisign Shares Q22012 Domain Growth Data

Recently, Verisign released the latest issue of the Domain Name Industry Brief, which showed that the Internet grew by more than seven million domain names in the second quarter of 2012. The total number of registered domain names now stands at more than 240 million, which represents a 3.1 percent growth rate over Q1’2012. This marks the sixth straight quarter with greater than 2 percent growth.  

As shown in the chart below, the order of the top TLDs in terms of zone size changed when compared to the first quarter.  The largest TLDs in terms of base size were, in order, .com, .de (Germany), .net, .tk (Tokelau), .uk (United Kingdom), .org, .info, .nl (Netherlands), .ru (Russian Federation) and .cn (China).*

The .com and .net TLD registrations experienced a 1.6 percent increase over Q1’2012, bringing the combined total number of domain names in the adjusted zone to 118.5 million. New registrations for the TLDs totaled 8.4 million, which reflects a 4.2 percent year-over-year increase. 

Verisign’s average daily Domain Name System (DNS) query load was 68 billion during the second quarter with a peak of 90 billion. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, the daily average increased 1.9 percent and the peak increased 21 percent.
